Since 1938, Fannie Mae (The Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA)) has been an innovative force in the mortgage industry. Their mission is to provide a stable source of liquidity for mortgage lending, supporting greater access to affordable home and rental housing finance in all markets, at all times.
Fannie Mae’s Duty to Serve team needed a data-driven strategy to support their affordable housing mission, using a wide range of data to learn about the regions with particularly underserved housing markets to ensure they get the most attention - providing insights to researchers and policymakers as collaborators. To do so, they needed to source the right data, create simple publishing workflows, and make insights easy for non-technical stakeholders to understand.
Published in late 2020, the Colonias Investment Areas Map Explorer (built using CARTO) has enabled hundreds of thousands of people to gain greater insight into where there is a greater need to provide affordable housing and mortgage financing to those who need it most in the Colonias areas.
CARTO’s platform made it easier to pull in different geospatial datasets, storing and updating at the frequency required by Fannie Mae to ensure relevant and up-to-date data is put in the hands of decision makers.
CARTO has enabled Fannie Mae’s Duty to Serve team to reach a wider audience, amplifying the highly impactful research carried out on the Colonias areas. By making it simple for business users to find and manipulate geospatial data, Fannie Mae has been able to save time and provide visual insights on maps faster - publishing in a seamless way alongside the full report on their website.
