Maarit is a planning geographer by origin. As part of her Ph.D. studies she was involved with the research team who developed the web mapping survey tool, SoftGIS, to aid public participation. Later on, the tool evolved to Maptionnaire which is now one of the leading platforms in PPGIS.
Avichai Bakst is part of one of Google’s most recent acquisitions, Waze, the world’s largest community-based traffic and navigation app with over 100MM active users. He's a veteran in the digital eco system with over 10 years of experience across multiple companies. Avichai joined Waze over 5 years ago, as Director of BizDev and launched their Location Based Advertising Platform all across EU ever since. Earlier this year he joined the Partnerships Team, and is now heading their strategic partnerships across all of EMEA.
Rodrigo has a BA in Economics and an MS in Data Science, both from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). Rodrigo is on a permanent quest to design Artificial Intelligence algorithms that can help decision makers leverage the possibilities that geographic data can bring.

Louis Debatte is Strategic Product Marketing Manager at TomTom Maps. He started his career in banking technology before moving to South Africa and joining TomTom. After a few years mapping the African continent, Louis is now based at TomTom’s headquarters in Amsterdam where he scouts the markets for new trends, harasses developers for innovative products and defines strategies around mobility, traffic management and smarter cities.
Gonzalo likes to make things grow. As a digital media entrepreneur he has worked on most sides of the value chain. From digital music at Sony Music to music apps at Microsoft, and networks at Telefonica. Gonzalo has been at Fastly since 2015 where he is GM for EMEA. He is passionate about content production, distribution and technology.
Raul is Head of Technology at CARTO, he takes care of leading and aligning everything technology-wise at CARTO. He joined the company in 2014 to develop and improve the tools, services, and APIs running it. He's a software engineer, with a background in computer science and several years of experience creating applications.
Mamata Akella is Head of Cartography at CARTO. She has been a professional web cartographer since 2008 and has a passion for pushing the limits of cartographic design with current web technologies to build beautiful, well thought out maps.
Ariana is a venezuelan audiovisual communicator and awarded designer based in Madrid, with years of experience in the Web, Product, and Game Design industries. At CARTO, she juggles between working on product design and web/graphic design for all our marketing projects.
Wenfei has a background in urban planning, economics, and design and is very excited to be combining those skills at CARTO. Previously, Wenfei worked the Civic Data Design Lab and Senseable Cities Lab at MIT.
Andy is a mathematical physicist by training who has been fascinated by maps since he was a boy. When not solving math problems or coding, you can find Andy drinking coffee, bike camping, or hiking.
Micael has a background in Economics and Digital Business Management. During almost 3 years at CARTO he has seen the company and product evolve and has worked with clients from different verticals to help them attain their desired business outcomes.
Tyler Bird is the Community Team Lead at CARTO. In this capacity he engages with non-profits, multilateral development institutions, the public sector, data science communities, and academia through Location Intelligence projects.
Javier holds a Msc. in Telecommunications Engineering and a MBA from IESE Business School. Prior to joining CARTO, he worked as project manager for a London-based satellite broadband operator. At CARTO, he is focusing on the post-sale business engagement with our largest accounts in EMEA.
Juan Murillo is in charge of Analytics Dissemination and Data for Social Good at BBVA Data & Analytics, a new Technology company created to extract the value enclosed on financial data. In this innovative framework he and his colleagues are currently exploring the possibilities of data reuse to create new informational services and provide macroeconomic insights built upon microtransacional data. As an output of this research process around smart cities analysis, he has been co-author of several scientifc papers in cooperation with MIT Senseable City Lab and other institutions.
Juande received a B.S. degree in Computer Engineering and Mathematics from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. In addition, he attended the Master in Data Science and Big Data in Finance at AFI Escuela de Negocios. At BBVA Data & Analytics, he has been using geo data for multiple purposes: from event impact measurement to touristic analysis. He is currently working on the incorporation of AI to the BBVA app.
Paul has been working with geospatial software for over 15 years: consulting to government and industry; building a geospatial software company; and programming on open source software. He co-founded the PostGIS spatial database project in 2001, and is currently an active developer and member of the project steering committee.
Jimena is a Geodesy and Cartography Engineer who has worked for different companies and organisations in technical and management roles. She started her PhD in 2011, which took her to The Netherlands and later to Canada, where she researched about Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), geodata integration, and geosemantics. Before she joined CARTO in 2017 as a Solutions Engineer, Jimena co-founded an Engineering firm and a tech NGO, to help spread the use of FOSS4G and maps in cultural and humanitarian projects. She is interested in climate change issues and social justice activities.
Luis is General Coordinator for the City of Madrid - looking after external promotion of the city, international partnerships, European funding and is also chief of Staff for Manuela Carmena, the mayor of Madrid.
