Headquartered in Vancouver, they are currently expanding their 5G network across Canada to power smarter cities, improve healthcare, and enable digital transformation.

    The GIS team are experts in Location Intelligence, visualizations, predictive modeling, and automation for cross functional teams within TELUS. Their primary focus is spatial data relating to mobile cellular coverage and network infrastructure, using geographic insights to ensure rollout investment is as efficient as possible and the best possible coverage is provided to customers.

    For their LTE & HSPA networks, TELUS need to process extremely large amounts of data for downstream activities such as visualization, service qualification, customer support, and analytics. As their network grows (TELUS has committed to investing an additional $40 billion to support the roll out of its 5G network over the next three years), the team needed a scalable solution to support their transformation and move away from legacy GIS solutions that don’t integrate well with data warehouses.

    Using CARTO, they are able to rapidly generate and share internal coverage maps that are used across multiple teams within TELUS as a reference against wireless and wireline network infrastructure. A wide range of teams can use the internal map portal to help B2B clients or to upsell and cross sell services. Service qualification is also being used for fixed wireless access or IoT applications, which is an important growth area for their business.

    These visualizations are also shared with TELUS’ front line and network support agents to help troubleshoot network incidents and to help technicians identify the strongest signal at a location to properly install and calibrate user equipment for wireless high-speed internet service.

    Additionally TELUS are able to track the growth of their network by technology, frequency band, or even by market by performing analysis of the population, road, and area covered.
