LA Foreclosures

The city of Los Angeles has kept a foreclosure registry for the last four years and, as of May 19th, 2014, 4,300 properties were included. The Los Angeles Times interpreted this data with CARTO to report on the state of the housing market.

Challenge

The Los Angeles Times informed the public about the state of the city's housing market by making municipal data easily communicable.

Solution

The Los Angeles Times worked with the Los Angeles Housing Community Investment Department, OpenStreetMap, and CARTO to design a map that shows addresses with at least one foreclosed property and foreclosed properties with at least one complaint. The map findings reveal that the hardest hit neighborhoods are South L.A., the Eastside, and parts of the San Fernando Valley.
